Primary, Urgent, Emergency or Virtual Care

Here’s How to Decide

When you have a minor illness or injury, knowing where to get care is the first step to feeling better. CHI Saint Joseph Health offers a variety of high-quality options to meet your needs, either close to home or right from your phone. Use this quick guide to help you choose.

Think it’s an emergency? Call 911 immediately or go to your nearest ER.

Primary Care

Your primary care provider should usually be your first call for non-emergency situations. As your partner in wellness, your provider knows your health history, including medications, existing conditions or other factors that may affect treatment. They can also refer you directly to a specialist if needed, and provide ongoing support to help keep you and your family healthy.

Emergency Care

When you’re faced with a life-threatening injury or illness, call 911 or go to your nearest emergency room (ER). Emergency Care offers around-the-clock care from emergency medicine physicians, nurses and support staff. Whether you or a family member are experiencing a heart attack, stroke, head injury or trauma, uncontrolled bleeding or other health care emergency, the ER is there to determine the level of care you need and begin the treatment process.
