Women’s Hospital at Saint Joseph East Opens Lactation Clinic
Service available to all nursing mothers, regardless of where they deliver

Lexington, Ky. (October 15, 2015) -- The World Health Organization recognizes breastfeeding as “one of the most effective ways to ensure child health survival.” Yet globally, less than 40 percent of infants under six months of age are breastfed exclusively.

The Women’s Hospital at Saint Joseph East, part of KentuckyOne Health, wants to do its part to help that number grow in Fayette County and beyond. The facility has now expanded its services to include an outpatient lactation clinic, named the Beth Broderson-Bray & Vicki Stephens Lactation Room. The new program was funded by donors to the Saint Joseph Hospital Foundation.

“There is a need,” said Joan Morrin, nurse manager at the Women’s Hospital at Saint Joseph East. “Research has consistently shown that there are many health benefits to breastfeeding – benefits for both the mother and the baby.”

Each mother who gives birth at the Women’s Hospital is visited by a lactation consultant who educates and provides services to the mother. With the opening of the patient lactation clinic, breastfeeding mothers have the opportunity to schedule a follow-up appointment to work with a Certified Lactation Consultant. During this appointment, mother and baby receive support and work toward resolving any breastfeeding issues they may be having.

Those benefits include decreased occurrences of ear infections, asthma, diabetes and obesity. Breastfeeding also promotes mother-baby bonding.

“Support from a professionally trained and Certified Lactation Consultant can result in greater breastfeeding success,” said Morrin.

The clinic is open to anyone in the community, regardless of where they deliver. For more information or to make an appointment, visit kentuckyonehealth.org//womens-hospital-saint-joseph-east/services/birth-center/breastfeeding-services or call 859-967-5167.
