Saint Joseph Hospital to Offer Free Hands-Only CPR Training
Event part of effort to train 35,000 people in hands-only CPR during Heart Month

Saint Joseph Hospital, part of KentuckyOne Health, will host a special hands-only CPR training event on Wednesday, Feb. 3 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Saint Joseph Hospital lobby. The event is part of a statewide initiative from KentuckyOne Health to train 35,000 Kentuckians in hands-only CPR during the month of February, which is American Heart Month. Individuals can be trained in hands-only CPR in as little as five minutes.

Individuals who live in areas where bystanders are more likely to start CPR have a better chance of survival following out-of-hospital cardiac arrest, according to a recent report from the Institute of Medicine. Not only is hands-only CPR easier for the public to learn and remember, but research shows bystanders are more likely to act when they don’t have to do mouth-to-mouth.

Hands-free participants will watch a 60-second video and be provided brief, targeted instructions before practicing their skills on mannequins. Trainers will coach participants on hand placement and depth of compressions, then each participant will be asked to perform 60 seconds of CPR on their own.
