KentuckyOne Health Expands Focus on Population Health

Louisville, Ky. (January 28, 2016) – One of Kentucky’s former top health officials has joined the leadership team of KentuckyOne Health to coordinate population health initiatives across the system. Stephanie Mayfield Gibson, MD, a board-certified anatomic and clinical pathologist with a 10-year record of public health management, will serve as vice president of population health for the KentuckyOne Health system and chief medical officer for KentuckyOne Health Partners, the Medicare approved Accountable Care Organization (ACO) formed by KentuckyOne Health.

Dr. Mayfield Gibson was most recently the commissioner of health for the Commonwealth of Kentucky, reporting to the governor.

Ruth Brinkley, president and CEO, KentuckyOne Health, observed, “In addition to being the largest health care system in the Commonwealth, the KentuckyOne Health mission is to bring wellness, healing and hope to all, including the underserved. Dr. Mayfield Gibson, in this new role, will allow us to better coordinate the many programs sponsored by KentuckyOne Health and KentuckyOne Health Partners, and improve the care for all Kentuckians.

KentuckyOne Health has been a leader in piloting and funding community health initiatives, such as Healthy Communities, which orchestrates communication among agencies in the region, allowing better access for patients and families in need. KentuckyOne Health has been recognized with numerous awards for these efforts.

“From expanding Kentucky’s newborn screening to introducing new Tuberculosis and heart disease testing technology, Dr. Mayfield Gibson has proven herself to be a warrior for the health of the people of the Commonwealth,” said Don Lovasz, president of KentuckyOne Health Partners. “We are thrilled to have a population health veteran like her join our team so we can make even greater strides improving the quality and value of Kentucky health care.”

Specifically, KentuckyOne Health Partners has been implementing several new care coordination programs proposed by the federal government and commercial insurance companies like Anthem, Humana and Passport. As a result, the ACO has accelerated the safety and quality improvements in health care services while avoiding unnecessary and duplicative costs. Currently the largest ACO in the state, KentuckyOne Health Partners coordinates the care for 80,000 lives under contract and works with nearly 2,000 participating physicians.

In her role as the chief medical officer for KentuckyOne Health Partners, Dr. Mayfield Gibson will lead and facilitate medical service policy and procedures, medical skills development and change management among healthcare providers. She will also serve as part of the KentuckyOne Health Partners senior leadership team that interacts with physicians, hospitals, long term care providers, insurance companies, public policy officials and the public.
