Berea, Ky. (May 14, 2015)—Saint Joseph Berea, part of KentuckyOne Health, will begin a series of free diabetes prevention and healthy lifestyle classes on Thursday, May 28, 2015.  The classes are held weekly on Thursdays at 5:30 p.m. at Saint Joseph Berea Diabetes and Nutrition Care, located at 305 Estill Street, 4th Floor, Education Suite.

The program is designed for individuals at high risk for Type 2 diabetes and is proven to help people lose weight and lower their risk of Type 2 diabetes by 58 percent.

Individuals who are overweight and meet any two of the following should consider enrollment:
• 18 years or older
• BMI > 24kg ( > 22 if Asian) = Overweight
• Been diagnosed with Pre-Diabetes or Gestational Diabetes based on:
– Fasting blood sugar (100-125mg)
– 2 hour glucose (140-199mg)
– Previous gestational diabetes
– A1C (5.7 to 6.4 percent)

Weekly classes include group meetings with a trained lifestyle coach to learn how to make healthy lifestyle changes. Groups meet weekly for 16 core sessions and monthly for six post-core sessions.

“This program is designed to help individuals learn and implement lifestyle changes to improve their health and reduce their risk for diabetes,” said Barbara Baumgardner, registered dietician. “The group setting allows participants to connect with others facing the same challenges for support and encouragement.”
