Flaget Memorial Receives Grant for Breastfeeding Initiative from Sisters of Charity of Nazareth

Bardstown, Ky. (May 4, 2015) – The Flaget Memorial Hospital Foundation, part of KentuckyOne Health, has received a $19,681 grant from the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth’s Ministry Fund for the “Flaget Healthy Moms and Babies Through Breastfeeding” initiative. The funding will help improve the health and wellbeing of mothers and babies by educating the community on health pregnancy and the importance of breastfeeding.

Grant money will provide new mothers with the tools and supplies they need for breastfeeding, as well as clinical support. It will benefit women and families who cannot afford to purchase supplies such as breast pumps, coolers, lanolin, breast pads and breastfeeding books. The program will target communication not only to pregnant women, but also to fathers, community members, employers and more. The goal is for Flaget Memorial’s service area to have better knowledge of the importance of breastfeeding for the health of both the baby and the mother, and to communicate the importance of how this affects the community and workplace.

“At Flaget, we see a significant population of younger mothers and patients who live under the poverty line or are uninsured,” said Amy Farrell, MD, KentuckyOne Health Obstetrics and Gynecology Associates. “Through this initiative, we hope to raise awareness of the importance of breastfeeding to the entire community and make sure that our underserved mothers and babies leave here with the knowledge and tools to continue breastfeeding for as long as possible through the first six to 12 months of their child’s life.”

This initiative reflects the spirit of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth by supporting and influencing the development of services and programs that will impact those who are underserved. The organization supports collaborative projects that work to build up the health of communities, create positive change and improve the perception of breastfeeding within the community.

“Starting a breastfeeding clinic and having lactation specialists/nurses available to prepare and coach new mothers will make a huge difference,” said Dr. Farrell. “It is our desire to start this program, measure the results and expand it in the future.”
