Saint Joseph Hospital and Saint Joseph East Nationally Recognized by Healthgrades

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Oct. 24, 2023) – Saint Joseph Hospital and Saint Joseph East have achieved numerous national accolades for clinical excellence for service lines, according to new research released by Healthgrades, the leading resource consumers use to find a hospital or doctor.

Saint Joseph Hospital is recognized for its cardiac, neurosciences, pulmonary, gastrointestinal and critical care service lines. The facility has received Five-Star recognition in each of these areas, is one of the Top 5% in the Nation for both Pulmonary and Critical Care Services, among the Top 10% in the Nation, and is also among the Top 100 Best Hospitals for both Pulmonary and Critical Care Services for the past six years in a row. Saint Joseph Hospital was named among America’s Top 100 Hospitals by Healthgrades earlier this year.

Saint Joseph East was named a Five-Star Recipient for its cardiac, neurosciences, gastrointestinal and critical care services. Saint Joseph East was named a recipient of the Healthgrades 2024 Gastrointestinal Surgery Excellence Award. The facility is also among the Top 10% in the Nation for Gastrointestinal Surgery.

These achievements place Saint Joseph Hospital and Saint Joseph East in the upper echelon of hospitals nationally for specialty care and reflect the organization’s commitment to consistently delivering the best care available.

“We are proud to receive recognition once again from Healthgrades for the high quality care we provide for our patients in the Lexington area each and every single day,” said Anthony Houston, Ed.D., FACHE, CEO, CHI Saint Joseph Health. “I continue to be inspired by the dedication of our providers and caregivers to meet the high standards set by Healthgrades to earn accolades year after year. Each and every day, they are fulfilling our mission, living our values, and achieving excellence.”

Jennifer Nolan, president, Saint Joseph East, also recognized the commitment of providers and caregivers. “They live our core values of excellence and compassion as we fulfill our mission to serve our community and work toward a healthier future for everyone, especially those who are vulnerable,” she said.

Healthgrades evaluates hospitals solely on clinical outcomes: risk-adjusted mortality and complications. By focusing on what matters most, patient outcomes, Healthgrades ratings provide critical feedback for both patients and hospitals. By offering easy access to objective performance measures, Healthgrades gives consumers the information they need to find a hospital that excels in providing the care they need. And by shining a light on strengths and weaknesses, Healthgrades ratings help direct hospitals to opportunities for clinical improvement.  The 2024 hospital assessment evaluated patient mortality and complication rates for 35 common conditions and procedures at approximately 4,500 hospitals nationwide to identify the top performers.

The 2024 Healthgrades analysis revealed that the variation in performance among hospitals continues to widen, making it increasingly important to seek care at top-rated programs.  From 2020 through 2022, if all hospitals as a group performed similarly to Five-Star hospitals, on average, 215,667 lives could potentially have been saved, and 149,521 patients could have avoided potential complications.*
