Saint Joseph Berea Sleep Wellness Center Celebrates Reopening, New Technology Offered - Archived

Berea, Ky. (December 13, 2018) – The Saint Joseph Berea Sleep Wellness Center will reopen on Monday, December 17, after nearly two years thanks to a nearly $40,000 contribution from the Saint Joseph Berea Foundation to help the facility offer enhanced sleep study services. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held at 4 p.m. on Monday at the Saint Joseph Berea Sleep Wellness Center, located at 305 Estill Street in Berea.

The Saint Joseph Berea Foundation’s purchase of the Philips Respironics Alice 6 LDxS PSG Sleep System will allow for sleep studies to be performed at Saint Joseph Berea.

“We are thrilled to be able to make this purchase to bring this valuable service back to the Berea community,” said Leslie Smart, CFRE, president, Saint Joseph Berea Foundation. “It is estimated that more than 50 million adults in the United States have a sleep disorder. With this new technology, the facility will be able to diagnose sleep issues in patients, allowing them to receive diagnostic care close to home.”

Sleep disorders are a prevalent problem in people of all ages, backgrounds and varying degrees of health. Common disorders include sleep apnea, narcolepsy or excessive drowsiness, sleepwalking, sleep paralysis, restless leg syndrome, teeth grinding and circadian rhythm disorders. Symptoms of sleep disorders can affect a person’s quality of life, and may include drowsiness, unrefreshing sleep, insomnia, headaches, difficulty concentrating, memory loss and irritability. These disorders can also lead to other chronic health issues if left undiagnosed and untreated.

Polysomnography, or sleep studies, are used to diagnose sleep disorders in patients. During a sleep study, the patient spends the night in the sleep lab while connected to monitors that measure their brain waves, heart rate, oxygen saturation and other factors while sleeping. This information helps the physician determine the sleep disorder that the patient may have. The patient’s primary care provider can then treat the patient.
