Saint Joseph Berea Among Top 20 Most Socially Responsible Hospitals of 2022 in U.S.

BEREA, Ky. (July 12, 2022) – Saint Joseph Berea has been recognized as one of the most socially responsible hospitals nationwide by the Lown Institute. The hospital ranked 13th on the list of top 20 hospitals in 2022 by the nonpartisan group.

“This recognition speaks to Saint Joseph Berea’s record in serving the community,” said John Yanes, president, Saint Joseph Berea. “Our mission focuses on serving everyone, especially those who are vulnerable. Our commitment to social responsibility dates back to 1812 when the women of the religious order established our ministry.”

The Lown Institute, a nonpartisan organization, examined more than 3,600 U.S. hospitals on 53 metrics for their success in the categories of health equity, value and patient outcomes; 66 hospitals received the highest marks for being socially responsible. To develop the ranking, the institute examined Medicare claims, CMS hospital cost reports and data from the Internal Revenue Service, as well as other publicly available information.

“Citizens put their lives and billions of tax dollars in the hands of America’s hospitals,” said Vikas Saini, MD, president of the Lown Institute. “We believe communities should have high expectations and the most socially responsible institutions should be lifted up as models for the system.”

Fifteen of the 66 most socially responsible hospitals had an extraordinary COVID-19 burden, meaning at least 26 weeks with at least 10 percent of inpatient beds filled by patients affected by the virus during the first year of the pandemic.
