KentuckyOne Health Cancer Care Offers Free Screenings June 14 - Archived

Lexington, Ky. (June 3, 2014)— KentuckyOne Health will offer free breast and prostate cancer screenings on Saturday, June 14 from 8 a.m. to noon. Free screenings will be available by appointment at the KentuckyOne Health Cancer Care location at 3470 Blazer Parkway, Suite 150 in Lexington.

Men receiving prostate cancer screenings will have blood drawn for a Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) test and will undergo an examination. The test measures the blood level of PSA, a protein that is produced by the prostate gland. High PSA levels can be an indication of prostate cancer. However, there are additional reasons for having an elevated PSA level, and some men who have prostate cancer do not have elevated PSA. Test results and recommendations will be mailed to the patient and his primary care provider.

Gentlemen will have a lab draw for PSA testing and then be examined in a private space. PSA and recommendations will be mailed to them and copied to PCP.

Prostate cancer screening is recommended for men age 50-75. African American men and men with a family history (father or brother) who had prostate cancer are at greater risk for the disease.

Women being screened for breast cancer will receive a physical examination and receive a referral for a mammogram as needed. A copy of the exam will be provided to each patient and her primary care provider.

Women age 40 and older should be screened for breast cancer annually. Patients with a family history of breast or ovarian cancer may need to be seen sooner. Clinical breast exams should occur yearly by a trained physician. Self breast exams are recommended annually for women beginning at age 20.

To schedule a free screening, call 859 313 2255 or 888 645 0013
