CHI Saint Joseph Medical Group Adds Interventional Cardiologist to Esteemed Team in Lexington

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Nov. 20, 2023) – CHI Saint Joseph Medical Group – Cardiology in Lexington recently welcomed Mohamed Ayan, MD, to its respected practice of physicians. Dr. Ayan’s commitment to patient care is deeply rooted in his extensive experience and expertise in cardiology. His journey in medicine began with a calling that never left him – the desire to improve health and better someone’s life.

“My first answer in medical school about why I went into medicine is I love to help people. It is still my answer today,” said Dr. Ayan.

Dr. Ayan is passionate about cardiology and the remarkable impact it has on saving lives.

“If I were to choose one specialty that allows me to help people the most, it would undoubtedly be interventional cardiology,” he said. “People come in with heart attacks, and opening a blocked artery during that attack is like a miracle because they have life again, and I found that fascinating.”

Dr. Ayan’s extensive education abroad and in the United States began at the University of Tripoli, Faculty of Medicine in Libya, where he obtained his MBBCh degree, the equivalent of a Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery degree. He completed internal medicine residencies at Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska, and Tripoli University teaching hospitals in Libya. Dr. Ayan’s postgraduate education also includes a cardiovascular medicine fellowship in Little Rock at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) and obtaining his Master of Public Health at Benedictine University in Lisle, Illinois.

Dr. Ayan’s patient care philosophy boils down to a simple yet powerful message for patient health – maintain a balanced diet and exercise. He believes these fundamental lifestyle choices are key to good health. He also believes in the power of compassionate patient care. Dr. Ayan emphasizes the importance of treating each patient as a unique individual and ensuring they are actively involved in their care.

“Just be a good listener. Listen to the patient. Don’t be judgmental. Be compassionate. Make the patient feel they are always part of the care,” said Dr. Ayan.

While the field of cardiology may present numerous challenges, Dr. Ayan views those challenges as opportunities to make a significant impact. He acknowledges the demanding nature of his work, including night shifts and being on call, but he finds the chance to improve and save lives at the end of the day an incredibly fulfilling gift.

In his spare time, Dr. Ayan enjoys spending quality moments with his family, including his four daughters, and playing soccer and volleyball.
