Respiratory Services

Respiratory Services at Saint Joseph Hospital provides around the clock therapy, diagnostic testing and education to aid in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of breathing disorders. Our respiratory therapists are specialists in advanced therapeutics and command mastery over the complex array of equipment and therapies required to help patients restore and maintain normal respiratory function while in the hospital and following discharge. Our services include:

  • Initiate, monitor and optimize mechanical ventilation, both invasive and noninvasive
  • Lung-volume expansion therapy
  • Secretion clearance therapy
  • Administer inhaled medications, primarily for bronchodilation, via metered dose inhalers, dry powder inhalers and small volume nebulizers
  • Maintain patient airways (emergency and elective) by inserting oral airways, nasotracheal or artificial airways, suctioning, assessment for proper airway placement
  • Airway intubation
  • Heliox delivery
  • Arterial line insertion
  • High Frequency Oscillatory Ventilation (HFOV)
  • Bronchoscopy assistance
  • Cardiopulmonary resuscitation participation
  • Administer oxygen and aerosol therapy (low-flow and high-flow oxygen)

  • Complete and screening pulmonary function studies
  • Indirect calorimetry
  • Six-minute walk test

Respiratory Services at Saint Joseph Hospital assesses the respiratory care needs of patients and initiates or recommends the most appropriate treatment available. Our therapists provide individualized patient education as needed, including aspects of pulmonary disease, home oxygen therapy and home respiratory therapy treatments.
