Lexington, Ky. (August 5, 2019) – Saint Joseph Hospital has earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® for Total Hip and Knee Replacement Certification. The hospital was recognized for demonstrating continuous compliance with performance standards. The Gold Seal is a symbol of quality that reflects a health care organization’s commitment to providing safe and quality patient care.

“We’re honored to be recognized for the quality and safety of our orthopedic programs,” said Bruce Tassin, CEO, CHI Saint Joseph Health, and president, Saint Joseph Hospital. “Our physicians and hospital employees consistently strive to make patients’ safety, care, treatment and recovery our top priority. Being acknowledged for our continued commitment to our patients with this award is truly rewarding.”
Saint Joseph Hospital recently underwent a rigorous and unannounced onsite review, including physician, patient and staff interviews. A team of experts from the Joint Commission evaluated compliance with other orthopedic-related certification standards, including national standards, for the hospital’s Total Hip and Knee Replacement program.

“These types of certifications are illustrative of a program that holds itself to a higher standard, driven by best practices established by people who have gone before us and those who evaluate the efficacy of these standards on a regular basis,” said Tharun Karthikeyan, MD, director of the hip and knee program at Saint Joseph Hospital and a surgeon at Lexington Clinic Orthopedics – Sports Medicine Center.

“The award for Total Hip and Knee Replacement Certification recognizes that Saint Joseph Hospital is committed to fostering continuous quality improvement in patient safety and quality of care,” said Mark Pelletier, RN, MS, chief operating officer, Accreditation and Certification Operations, and chief nursing executive, The Joint Commission. “We commend Saint Joseph Hospital for becoming a leader in orthopedic care, providing a higher standard of service for patients in its community.”
