Flaget Cancer Center Physician Receives Award from the National Cancer Institute

Bardstown, KY (October 20, 2017) – Dr. Monte Martin with the Flaget Memorial Hospital Cancer Center has been recognized by the National Cancer Institute for his successful level of participation and the number of patients he has enrolled to the NCI clinical trials over the past three grant years.

Flaget Memorial Hospital, part of KentuckyOne Health and sponsored by Catholic Health Initiatives, participates in the National Cancer Institute’s community oncology research program. The NCI Community Oncology Research Program (NCORP) is a national NCI-supported network that brings cancer prevention clinical trials and cancer care delivery research (CCDR) to people in their communities.

Catholic Health Initiatives was awarded the NCORP grant in 2014 and is now in year 4 of the 5-year grant.

At this year’s annual NCORP meeting, Dr. Martin and other teams and investigators were recognized. Only 10 percent of all NCORP rostered physicians qualified for an award. Dr. Martin received the “Appreciation Award.”

“I am honored to have received this award. I accept it on behalf of my patients who have endured the trauma of cancer and my staff who are with me each day to ensure safe patient care,” said Dr. Martin. “Getting patients enrolled and cared for in the latest and most effective clinical trials for their particular cancer provides them with a better chance for a quality life, successful treatment and many more years with their families.”

“Having a nationally honored physician on our staff at the Flaget Cancer Center means a lot to our community,” said Jennifer Nolan, president, Flaget Memorial Hospital. “They deserve the best care possible and up-to-date research and clinical trials for the best possible chance at a successful recovery. I commend Dr. Martin on his recognition.”
