About Stomach Intestinal Pylorus-Sparing (SIPS)

During the SIPS procedure your surgeon will remove part of the stomach, similar to the traditional sleeve gastrectomy, and reroute the small bowel using a single loop anastomosis. By creating a smaller stomach, the amount of food you can consume at a meal is restricted, helping you feel fuller sooner. This technique leaves the pylorus intact, which is an important part of the digestive process, including the absorption of vitamins and minerals.

Advantages

  • Enhanced weight loss results, with many patients seeing a majority of weight loss in the first 6 months
  • Lower risk of post-surgical complications
  • Improvement or remission of type 2 diabetes
  • An option for revision surgery for patients who have had a previously performed sleeve gastrectomy

Disadvantages

  • As with any medical procedure, there are risks you should consider before deciding to have weight loss surgery. Speak with your bariatric surgeon who can help answer any questions or concerns you may have regarding weight loss procedures.
