MRI

What is an MRI?
The MRI scanner uses radio waves and a magnetic field to provide detailed images (pictures) of your body. MRI does not expose you to ionizing radiation. You will be asked to remove any metal items, hearing aids, etc. before entering the scanner. If you have a pacemaker, you cannot have a MRI scan. The technologist will position you on the MRI table, flat on your back. It is very important for you to relax and remain still. The technologist will monitor the scan from an adjoining room. During the scan, you may hear various sounds from the scanner (ear plugs or headphones will be provided). The exam will last anywhere from 20 minutes to one hour. Feel free to ask the technologist how long the procedure will last.

If your doctor has ordered contrast, the technologist will insert a needle into a vein in your arm and inject the contrast. The substance will provide the physicians with additional information from your scan. The contrast is not considered a dye. It has minimal risks associated with its use. If you have a history of claustrophobia (fear of a confined space), please inform the technologist.

What do I do if there is a possibility that I might be pregnant?
If there is a possibility that you are pregnant, please tell the technologist before the scan.

Are any activities restricted after this procedure?
No, you may continue your normal activities.

Do I need to make changes to my diet?
Continue your normal diet unless otherwise instructed by scheduling or your physician.

Do I need to adjust any medications?
Your medicines should not be stopped unless your doctor tells you to.

My doctor requested that I bring my films to my next appointment, what do I do?
Saint Joseph has implemented a new imaging archiving system which allows physicians to digitally view your images in their offices. The technologist that performs your procedure will also be able to provide you with a CD (computerized disk) to take with you upon request. If you did not receive a CD from the technologist and you need a copy of your images, you can also contact the Radiology Imaging Library at 859.313.2290. If someone else is going to pick up your CD, you must call us and give us their information and they must present a picture ID.
