Saint Joseph Mount Sterling Offers Latest Technology to Test Hearing in Newborns - Archived

Mount Sterling, Ky. (May 28, 2019) – Saint Joseph Mount Sterling has a good reason to recognize Better Hearing Month, which is held each May to raise awareness of communication disorders. Thanks to funding from WHAS Crusade for Children and the Saint Joseph Mount Sterling Foundation, the hospital is able to provide the latest technology for testing hearing in newborns.

The hospital received a $10,000 grant from WHAS Crusade for Children last year to purchase the portable hearing screening monitor; the grant was matched by the Saint Joseph Mount Sterling Foundation. The equipment allows staff to assess newborns’ hearing and refer for early intervention if there is a problem. The test is noninvasive and parents receive the results before leaving the hospital.

“We are happy that we were able to upgrade the hearing screening monitor at Saint Joseph Mount Sterling with the help of a generous donation from the WHAS Crusade for Children,” said Leslie Buddeke Smart, CFRE, president, Saint Joseph Mount Sterling Foundation. “This thin portable machine can provide early detection for any hearing issues newborns may have and alerts parents that they may need to seek a referral from their pediatrician for additional testing or treatment.”

The 66th annual WHAS Crusade for Children is June 1-2, 2019.
