Maternity Education at Women's Hospital at Saint Joseph East

The Women's Hospital offers educational programs, maternity support, and a commitment to caring for all women and their families seeking Maternity Education classes.  We understand that you are faced with many decisions related to your maternity needs – let us provide you with the right tools and resources.

To ensure enrollment in our classes, please register when you are approximately 20 weeks gestation. 

Unless offered during a childbirth education or sibling class, hospital tours are on the second Sunday of each month, please register below.

Inclement Weather Policy: In the event Fayette County Schools close due to inclement weather, your class will be rescheduled. Please check your email for rescheduling information. In the event Fayette County has inclement weather the morning of your weekend class. Please check your email for class rescheduling information.

Cost: FREE per couple

Our Natural Childbirth 4-week series is a comprehensive and informative class on what to expect during labor, delivery and postpartum.  We highly recommend attending these classes when you are 28-30 weeks gestation.  A hospital tour is offered with this class.

Discussion topics include:

  • Natural course of labor and birth processes
  • Pain relief options
  • Cesarean birth/deliveries
  • Comfort measures -- breathing and relaxation techniques
  • Interventions and decreasing risk of complications
  • After delivery care
  • Hospital admitting procedures
  • Creating a birth plan/wish list

Like our 4-week series, our 2-week is a comprehensive and informative class on what to expect during labor, delivery and postpartum. We highly recommend attending these classes when you are 34 weeks gestation.

Lasting only 4 1/2 hours, you will receive an abbreviated version of discussion topics covered in our 4-week series.  We highly recommend attending this class when you are 32-34 weeks gestation.  A hospital tour is offered with this class.

Cost: FREE per couple

This one-time class incorporates educational material designed to make you feel more comfortable and secure in your ability to take care of your newborn. A pediatrician will be in attendance as a guest speaker. We recommend attending this class during your third trimester.  Registered grandparents are welcomed to attend.

  • What to expect in the hospital
  • Normal newborn appearances
  • Caring for your newborn
  • Feeding your newborn
  • Bathing techniques for your newborn
  • Cord and circumcision care
  • Hands-on activities-swaddling, diaper changing and holding-using life-sized dolls

Our Breastfeeding classes are taught by International Board Certified Lactation Consultants or Certified Lactation Counselors.  We recommend attending this class during your third trimester.  Spouses are encouraged to attend.  

Prenatal preparation for breastfeeding topics focus on:

  • Advantages of breastfeeding
  • Proper positioning and latch-on
  • Guidelines for adequate breastfeeding
  • How to prevent and resolve discomforts
  • Breast pump options
  • Storage of milk
  • Breastfeeding and returning to work

Cost: FREE per couple - Limit of 3 couples per class

This is a one-time class.  Parents will be able to learn basic techniques of Cardiopulmonary
Resuscitation (CPR) and choking for their newborn.  Educational material covers infants from newborn to one-year-old.  We recommend attending this class during your third trimester.  If you have already delivered, please arrange for a babysitter for your little one, we want you to be able to completely benefit from this important and possible life-saving class.  This is not a certification class; no AHA certificate will be given.

Cost: FREE per couple

Parent or guardian must accompany child.  Limited to 5 children per class.  

Recommended for children ages 3 to 6 years old, this is a fun class for big brothers and sisters.  Our goal is to promote a strong family unit as well as relieving some of the anxieties of bringing a new baby into the household.

Children will be able to:

  • Become familiar with where their mommy and new sibling will be staying while at the hospital
  • Gain hands on experience with holding and diapering a life size doll

Weekend Childbirth Education Class

Our 4-week childbirth education series condensed to an all-day weekend class. This is a comprehensive and informative class on what to expect during labor, delivery and postpartum.  We highly recommend attedning these classes when you are 28-30 weeks gestation.
